Ok....So I Lied | Rockford Infant Photographer

Rules are made to be broken. And, in my life, maternity leave is meant to be ignored sometimes. I am not the type of gal who can just rest on my laurels and NOT photograph anything for an entire 6 weeks. Just can't do it.

So when my former bride Stacey contacted me and let me know she was going to be in town for the holidays and wanted pics of her adorable new bundle Reagan, how could I say no? Far from it...I jumped at it...especially after not leaving the house for anything but doctor visits and a quick, painful run to Walmart in 2 weeks. Routine? Back to work? Yes please!

Reagan made it a dream session. She was wide awake but super-still and calm. The perfect infant model.

So, totally worth breaking maternity leave for! Enjoy the sneak peek Stacey and Tony and have a GREAT holiday!

Why Can't We Be Friends? | Beloit Family Photographer

Why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends?
- War

Oh Lauren, Lauren, Lauren. Someday, my dear, we will be buddies. You will look forward to our yearly meeting with rapt attention and excitement. You will pose willingly, happily. You will love "picture day".....someday.

Today....well, not that day. But, we tried something new this year: ninja sneaking and confinement to one area. Keep her busy....try to sneak in what I could....and if all else fails? Begging.

We actually did pretty good, with Lauren's mom and dad helping we got some good shots.

Someday, Lauren. We will be friends : )

She looked up and I snapped this and was so stinkin' happy I got it that I could have packed it in right there! : )

Lauren is a master at face-hiding.

"Knight" Before Thanksgiving | Beloit Family Photographer

Ok, so it's a cheesy title...I'm allowed a bit of cheesiness sometimes!

I met with the Knight family at Beloit College today...and we struck out in the freezing weather (was it NOT 66-some degrees just 2 days ago?!) to get some fun family shots.

I've done sittings with Maurion and his wife Kami (and their little one Nolia) a few times and this time we got Maurion's whole family together. And they are naturals, let me tell ya....some people just KNOW what to do when a camera is on them. I am not one of those people...but the camera loves this whole family. Makes my job easy!

We made a stop by the family's church for a quick outfit change and some more shots as well. I hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your sneak peek!

Work it out, Maurion. Work. It. OUT.

All I have to say is, what did I do before OCF? Solves all sorts of funky lighting issues. Like dark ceilings with no bounce-ability.

You Wanna Take This Inside? | Milwaukee Family Photographer.

So, summer is over. It may still be warm outside....but I'm looking out my office window right now at a massive rainstorm that is sending my DirectTV into a non-working frenzy and making my window panes rattle. Not exactly "frolicking in the meadow taking pictures" type weather.

Last week a photographer pal of mine and I were discussing studios and the pros and cons of having dedicated studio space to offer indoor shoots to clients. I expressed concern that in our state, which has two season: construction and winter , people seem to be reluctant to schedule family and child portrait sittings in winter months if there is no studio available. She suggested I blog about the wonders and pros of using your own home for your portrait sitting.

Now, don't get me wrong...studios have a LOT to offer. Controlled lighting, for one thing. You often have a bevy of backdrops, props, and situations to bring to the shoot. But, there are many positives to allowing a photographer to come into your home.

Now, wait a minute Ms. Type A.....you may be saying...my house is a cracker box and I we have a dog, a cat, a monkey....our couch is ugly...the drapes need to be replaced. You can probably think of a million reasons NOT to have a professional photographer shoot in your home. I've heard most of them. And I intend to address them in hopes that when the weather takes a turn for the worst...you'll still consider having an on-location photographer visit you and your family.

Excuse #1: My house is tiny and/or FUG.
Ok, I can relate. Really, I can. Our old house in Milwaukee was dinkie. Super-dinkie. And not all that fancy. The neighborhood wasn't stellar. Curb appeal? Meh. It was brown. Very brown. And did I mention small? Oh yeah. It was small. Plus, I decorate about as well as I dress....and I have several people that can attest to my lack of fashion sense.

But I took a TON (read: thousands) of pictures of Betty in that space....because it's really all I had to work with...so it was all about making it work.
I've shot in big, beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens homes....and I've shot in hospital rooms. Not only can you make nearly any space work, but people often really overlook the beauty in their "ordinary".

Beauty in the ordinary. (Shot in the super-tiny bedroom of my old house)

Excuse #2: My Kids are Crazy and Won't Behave Indoors.
Ok, I can relate as well. Cramped up indoors all winter....kids become insane little monsters. But, believe me, they are much LESS insane if they are comfortable with their surroundings and you have their favorite items around to bribe them with.

Excuse #3: We Want Something "Different".
Studios are fabulous, because you truly get the "photographer" experience. The lights! The props! You are a SUPER MODEL. But, there is something to be said for using the items in your home to truly bring a personal touch to your images. Your couch. Your chair. Your grandmother's heirloom painting. Your weird collection of troll dolls. Something that says "US".

I walked into this client's home and was instantly taken by their couch. The clean lines, the retro vibe. LOVED it.

Excuse #4: We Want Something Very Simple.
I am a HUGE fan of the plain color background. HUGE. I love just a great smile (or great big eyes) backed by black...or blue...or white. Stark and to the point lovely.
This is not something that is out of the question in the home. I do it all of the time. Often, all you need it some fabric (which I typically bring with me) or a great colored wall.
Black velvet on a Boppy on the floor. Viola! Portrait backdrop.

Excuse # 5: My house is a Mess.
Not sure I can really help with this one too much, because...well...that's your deal! But unless you're a candidate for the show Hoarders, I guarantee you I can work around it (or work with it and create a really cool concept shot).

The Pros:
There are definitely pros to allowing me to come to you. Here's a quick run down:

1. You can schedule your shoot year round. And I promise to take my shoes off in your house.

2. Kids can be comfy and you don't have to hustle them out of the door.

3. No use dragging a million outfits and personal props to the studio. Just keep them on hand...if you decide to throw another outfit on the pile, go for it. We're right there!

4. Brings a very unique, personal touch to your images.

Images taken in the client's home. Fun wall color = bonus!

So, fear not the onset of cold weather, Wisconsinites. I'm still shooting....and having a sitting in your home can be a great, personal way of getting those holiday shots.

Grandma and Papa and Betty. | Beloit Family Photographer.

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey

I normally try to mix up locations, especially with back to back shoots, but Beckman Mill has family connections for my inlaws...plus its hard to beat this place for versatility and beauty in the Beloit area.

So, today we headed over to the Mill again, this time for a fun fall/family shoot with my mother and father-in-law Jim and Jan and the infamous Betty Claire. Betty was a bit punchy, coming off a weekend of parties and candy, but settled down for a few shots at least.

It was a bit chilly, and we didn't get any of that warm sun wash I normally seek out, but I think they turned out wonderfully given the kind of cruddy weather we had to work with.

Enjoy the sneak peek, love you guys!

Now, Jim said this shirt was "melon"....I say its pink and he's in pink-shirt denial.

Maternity Leave Info. | Milwaukee Wedding Photographer.

Maternity Leave Information for Type A Images

As most of you probably know, I'm expecting my Second Shooter (read: new baby) on December 23rd, 2010. Everything is going along swimmingly.

I wanted to remind those past clients who are still in need of albums from their wedding packages that I will need your picture selections for your albums (typically your Top 20 choices) by October 16th if you want delivery in time for Christmas.
If you are looking to schedule a session for Christmas/Holiday pictures, I would ask that you schedule this session for no later than December 3rd to allow time for editing and delivery. I still have plenty of November dates open for portrait sittings. If you are in need of portrait gifts or cards from your sitting, please schedule your sitting by November 13th to allow time for ordering.

I will be returning from maternity leave on January 21st (with a wedding to kick it off!). After this time I will resume taking portrait sittings as usual.

If you have any questions about scheduling or product ordering, feel free to email Type A @ typeaimages@gmail.com

Friday Fractured Thought | Milwaukee Wedding Photographer

- Another week done...and closer to the end of summer. This summer has FLEW by. Just ridiculous. I have never been busier, work related or otherwise. New home, new city, new clients, new everything. Lots of change and I am going to kind of welcome the calm of fall.

- That being said, I sat down to figure out the rest of my season and prepare...and realized I still have TWELVE weddings before the end of the year. Holy cannoli! And for all the upcoming brides that may be concerned about my current "delicate" state (I've gotten a few emails...), not to worry, I will not be too pregnant to shoot your weddings!

- I wanted to put a quick plug out there. About a year or so ago, I...along with some other local photogs...were inquiring about there being workshops in the midwest. Yes, there are local workshops, which are great, but it kind of seemed like those folks out in So. Cal were having one every week. Local tog Mandie Haberman got on it and this September she will be hosting Portland photographer Brandon Perron at her home in Madison. His workshop (or FAILshop, as he calls it) is all about learning through failure. There will be areas on pricing, marketing, shooting, style, lots of areas covered. There are STILL openings for this workshop, so check it out and register @ http://www.photogshops.com/index2.php#/gallery1/3/

- Speaking of workshops and the like, I'm super excited to be joining Andrea Paradowski, Stephanie Natale, and Alex Hanson at WPPI- Chicago next month. Very jazzed, since I can't attend the actual WPPI this year (Second Shooter will be too-newbish at that point). This will hopefully be enough to tide me over until 2012...because then...my friends...we party.

- ANNND...speaking of super-awesome photo-friends and Second Shooter, I have to extend a very heart-felt thank you to those who attended Wednesday night's CLASS @ Mandie's house and surprised me (like, literally...it took me awhile to notice I was standing right next to the cake!) with baby socks and a "Second Shooter is a Girl!" cake. Very thoughtful!

- Bookings are filling up, and fall is almost closed for bookings. So, getting those Christmas Card shoots in is better done sooner rather than later. I know...you don't want to think about snow and stuff, believe me. But, I'd hate to see people miss out on good dates!

- I got the confirmation this week, so it's probably cool that I spill the beans early on this one: I'm a member of WPPI and for their September 2010 newsletter (and website) they will be featuring the Kindred Spirits Hospice Program under their "Photolanthropy" feature. I am SUPER excited about this. They will be showing some of the Kindred Spirits work I've done and talking about the program. It's great exposure for my little hometown project and this just thrills me to no end. I will be sure to link the bejesus out of it once it "drops".

- This pregnancy's "food du jour" seems to be shifting. It had been bagels, for-ev-er. Which, while mighty tasty, ran me the risk of packing on the poundage like mad. Oh, carb heaven. So, now the baby seems to want Count Chocula cereal. Which is oh-so-good. They only sell it at Woodman's apparently, so the Woodman's folks are getting to know me pretty well. I've been there twice already this week to get my Chocula fix.

Up this week: Tonight was supposed to be a fun family sitting, but was postponed again due to the cruddy weather, so that was moved to Thursday. Tomorrow is a Milwaukee wedding @ Gesu Church and The Wisconsin Club, and next week I have a senior session as well. Spread the word to seniors you know, there is still time to book!

And here it is, your moment of Zen......I mean Betty.....

Vintage dress compliments of hubby's Aunt Julie, who knows the key to my heart: vintage frocks. I just picked up a pair of pink knit knee socks for Betty off Etsy that I cannot WAIT to get on her for another shoot. Once things slow down I'll have to set something up.

Relatively Speaking. | Beloit Family Photographer.

It's always fun to shoot people you know, and throw meeting new family on top of it and it makes for a nice sitting.

Tonight I "shot" my husbands' Uncle and Aunt and their kids and grandkids, who are in town for a big family reunion.

We took everyone over to the Beloit College Campus and took advantage of some of their lush lawns, pretty poetry garden, and Anthropology Museum building.

It was so nice meeting everyone, and I hope the big reunion goes well on Saturday!

Enjoy the sneak peek!
